Compare look-alike stones

Two stones that look almost identical? These side-by-side guides show the fast, reliable ways to tell common look-alikes apart — by hardness, streak, heft and the tells a photo alone can miss.

Most misidentifications happen between a handful of famous look-alikes: a brassy mineral mistaken for gold, a red gem that could be garnet or ruby, a white stone that might be howlite or turquoise. The stones in each pair share a color, luster or shape — but differ in the properties that actually define them, like hardness, streak, density and the way they break. A single quick test is usually enough to settle it for good.

Where the confusion comes from

Look-alike mix-ups cluster into families. The metallic golds — pyrite, chalcopyrite, weathered mica — all flash brassy in a creek bed, but true gold is soft and malleable where pyrite is brittle and leaves a greenish-black streak. The red gems — garnet, ruby, red spinel — can be near-identical by eye, yet ruby is dramatically harder than garnet, so a hardness check separates them fast. And the opaque whites and sky-blues — howlite, magnesite, dyed imitations of turquoise — are the most commercially abused family of all: much of what is sold as cheap “turquoise” is dyed howlite, and a close look at the matrix pattern usually gives it away.

Color is the least reliable property in every one of these families, which is why each comparison leans on the properties that cannot be faked cheaply: hardness, streak, density and fracture.

  • Hardness: the Mohs scale ranks what scratches what — a steel knife and a piece of glass sort most pairs in seconds.
  • Streak: the color of a mineral's powder on unglazed porcelain, covered in our streak test guide — it exposes pyrite, hematite and many painted fakes.
  • Heft: density you can feel — gold is far heavier than pyrite for the same size, and glass imitations feel light and warm next to real stone.
  • Fracture & structure: how a stone breaks or grows — conchoidal glassy breaks, banding, or crystal faces — often decides a pair the other tests leave open.
