Sapphire is gem-quality corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) — and, after diamond, the hardest material most people will ever hold, sitting at 9 on the Mohs scale. Its signature is a deep royal blue, caused by traces of iron and titanium woven into an otherwise colorless mineral, but the key fact that surprises most people is that sapphire is not only blue: every color of gem corundum except red is called sapphire. Pink, yellow, green, violet, colorless and the rare pinkish-orange padparadscha are all sapphires. The red one has its own name — ruby.
That hardness, combined with excellent toughness and no easy cleavage, makes sapphire the most practical of the great colored gems: it can be worn every day for a lifetime and handed down still looking new, which is exactly why it dominates engagement rings after diamond. Because fine blue sapphire is valuable and heavily imitated, it is also a stone people often want to verify — and the same properties that make it durable (extreme hardness, high density) are the ones that help confirm it.

How to identify sapphire
Start with hardness, because it rules out most pretenders instantly: corundum is 9 on the Mohs scale, so a genuine sapphire scratches every common gem below it — topaz, quartz, glass — and is scratched by nothing but diamond. It is also noticeably dense, feeling heavier in the hand than a same-size glass or quartz imitation. In rough crystal form, sapphire tends to grow as barrel-shaped or tapering six-sided (hexagonal) prisms, often with flat ends and triangular growth markings on the faces.
Beyond hardness and heft, sapphire is strongly pleochroic: tilt a blue stone and the blue shifts between a greenish and a more violet tone as the viewing angle changes, something glass never does. Many natural sapphires also carry fine needle-like inclusions (called silk) that can be seen with a loupe, and when those needles are dense and oriented they produce a six-rayed star in cabochon-cut stones. A hard-9, dense, pleochroic blue stone with natural silk is almost certainly sapphire; a light, warm, bubble-filled one is not.
Color and varieties
Blue is the classic and the benchmark, and its quality is judged on how vivid and evenly saturated it is: the most prized stones hold a rich medium blue that stays alive in any light rather than going ink-dark or washed-out. The velvety cornflower blue historically associated with Kashmir sits at the top, with Burma (Myanmar) and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) the other storied origins and Madagascar, Australia and Montana major modern sources. Origin can multiply price, but color quality comes first.
Fancy sapphires — every non-red color — widen the family enormously. Pink, yellow and violet are increasingly popular and often cleaner and more affordable than fine blue; green and colorless (once used as diamond substitutes) exist too. The rarest and most coveted is padparadscha, a delicate blend of pink and orange named for a lotus blossom, which commands prices rivaling fine blue. Some sapphires also show a color change (blue in daylight, violet under lamplight) or the star effect described above.
Meaning and history
Sapphire has been the stone of authority and the heavens for millennia. Persian tradition imagined the sky as the reflection of a colossal blue sapphire; medieval clergy wore it as a symbol of heaven and pious wisdom; and royalty adopted it as a token of truth, faithfulness and divine favor — a lineage that runs unbroken into the modern royal sapphire engagement ring. Folklore also cast it as a truth-teller and a guard against envy and harm.
As September's birthstone, sapphire carries these associations of wisdom, loyalty and nobility into contemporary gift-giving. Such meanings are cultural and historical rather than medical; sapphire is a beautiful and meaningful stone to wear, but it is not a remedy for any condition. Its enduring symbolism, more than any claimed power, is what has kept it on royal fingers and altar rings for a thousand years.
Value: what sapphire is worth
Color drives sapphire value above all else — a vivid, evenly saturated medium blue outsells both pale and overly dark stones, and clarity, cut and carat follow. Origin adds a further layer: documented Kashmir, Burmese and untreated Ceylon stones carry strong auction premiums, and a credible laboratory report stating 'no indications of heating' can multiply the price of an otherwise similar gem.
Because almost all commercial sapphire is heat-treated to improve color and clarity — a stable, accepted, centuries-old practice — treatment status is central to value rather than a simple pass/fail. Assume a stone is heated unless a serious lab says otherwise, and never pay an unheated premium without paperwork. Fancy colors, especially padparadscha and fine pink, can rival blue; ordinary heated blue and pastel fancies remain some of the best value in durable, everyday-wearable colored gems.
Real vs. fake sapphire
Three things get sold as sapphire. The first is lab-created sapphire — real corundum, grown rather than mined, chemically identical and just as hard, honest when disclosed and a fraud when not; tell-tale curved growth striae or gas bubbles under magnification often betray older flame-fusion synthetics, but confident separation can need a lab. The second is glass and other soft blue stones, which are easy to catch: glass is softer (scratchable), warmer to the touch, often full of round bubbles, and shows no pleochroism.
The third and most deceptive is the composite or 'lead-glass-filled' sapphire — heavily fractured low-grade corundum whose cracks are filled with glass to fake clarity. These are sold cheaply and are fragile: a jeweler's flame, ultrasonic cleaner or even household chemicals can damage the filling, and flashes of blue or trapped bubbles show along the fractures under a loupe. The blunt rule holds: a large, clean, vivid 'sapphire' at a bargain price deserves suspicion until a report proves otherwise.
Care
Sapphire is one of the easiest fine gems to live with. At hardness 9 with good toughness and no troublesome cleavage, it shrugs off the scratches and knocks of daily wear better than almost any colored stone, which is why it is the classic recommendation for engagement rings and everyday jewelry. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush clean it beautifully, and untreated or simply heat-treated stones tolerate ultrasonic and steam cleaning well.
The exceptions are treated stones. Lead-glass-filled composites and, occasionally, fracture-filled or diffusion-treated sapphires can be harmed by heat, acids and ultrasonic cleaners, so if a stone's treatment is unknown, clean it gently by hand and keep it away from harsh chemicals. Store sapphire separately from softer gems it can scratch, and — because it can scratch almost everything else — keep it from rubbing against other jewelry.
