Rock Tumbling for Beginners: What Actually Works

Rock tumbling is the most satisfying thing you can do with a bucket of found rocks, and the most commonly botched. The machine does the work, but it only does it well if you get two things right before you switch it on: which rocks go in together, and how long you are prepared to wait.
The honest headline is that a proper tumble takes about four weeks, not a weekend. Nearly every disappointing result — dull stones, chipped edges, a barrel of gritty mud — traces back to rushing a stage or mixing rocks that should never have shared a barrel.
The one rule that decides whether your batch works
Tumble rocks of similar hardness together. This is the rule beginners break first and regret most.
Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, and in a tumbler the harder rocks act as grinding media against the softer ones. Put a piece of soft calcite in with quartz and agate and the calcite will not simply polish more slowly — it will be ground away and rounded into a pebble while the quartz is barely touched, and the debris will contaminate the batch. Aim to keep everything within roughly one point of hardness on the Mohs scale.
For a first batch, the sweet spot is the quartz family at around Mohs 7: **jasper, chalcedony, clear quartz, amethyst and rose quartz all sit close enough together to share a barrel happily. The four stages, and what each one is for
A rotary tumble runs in four stages, each with a finer abrasive than the last. You wash the barrel and the rocks thoroughly between every stage — a single grain of coarse grit carried into the polish stage will scratch everything and waste a month.
- Stage 1 — coarse grind (about 60/90 grit). The shaping stage, and the longest. This is where sharp edges disappear and the rock takes its final form. Usually about a week, sometimes two for stubborn material. Nothing later can fix a shape you did not achieve here.
- Stage 2 — medium grind (about 120/220 grit). Removes the scratches left by the coarse grit. Around a week.
- Stage 3 — fine grind or pre-polish (about 500 grit). Smooths the surface until it looks matte-even. Around a week. Rocks should feel silky, not gritty, before you move on.
- Stage 4 — polish (cerium oxide, aluminium oxide or tin oxide). The shine stage. Around a week. Many people add a plastic pellet filler here to cushion the load and carry the polish evenly.

Why it takes weeks, and why you cannot shortcut it
Each stage exists to erase the scratch pattern left by the one before. Skip or shorten a stage and the finer abrasive has to remove damage it was never designed for, so the surface never fully clears. The result is the classic beginner outcome: stones that are smooth to the touch but cloudy rather than glossy.
The other cause of a dull finish is porosity. Not every rock takes a polish, no matter how patient you are. Porous or grainy material — much sandstone, chalky limestone, many soft shales — has no continuous surface to shine. If a rock looks matte and slightly sugary after the fine stage, it is the rock, not your technique.
Loading the barrel properly
Two things ruin more batches than any grit mistake.
Fill level. A rotary barrel wants to be roughly two-thirds to three-quarters full of rock. Too empty and the load drops and chips instead of sliding; too full and it barely moves at all. Water usually goes to just below the top of the rock.
Size mix. Include a range of sizes rather than a barrel of identical large stones. Smaller pieces work into the gaps and carry the grit against the bigger ones. If everything you have is large, plastic pellets or ceramic media do the same job.
What to tumble, and what to leave out
- Excellent: jasper, agate and chalcedony, quartz of all kinds, petrified wood, and **tiger's eye** — hard, dense, and they take a genuine glass-like shine.
- Good with care: **obsidian** polishes beautifully but is glass, so it chips easily and is best tumbled with its own kind and a gentler coarse stage.
- Poor: porous sandstone, chalky limestone, and anything crumbly — these round off without ever shining.
- Leave out entirely: anything soft enough to scratch with a fingernail or a coin, any rock with visible cracks or vugs that will shed into the batch, and anything you actually care about as a specimen. Troubleshooting a bad batch
- Chipped edges — the barrel was underfilled, the load was all the same large size, or a brittle rock like obsidian was tumbled with harder material.
- Dull, cloudy finish — a stage was cut short, or grit was carried over. Go back to the fine stage and rerun it after a thorough wash.
- Some stones shiny, some flat — a hardness mismatch, or genuinely porous rock in the mix. Sort by hardness and rerun.
- Rocks much smaller than expected — normal. Expect noticeable size loss in the coarse stage; that is the shaping happening.
- Sludge that never clears — soft material breaking down in the barrel. Remove it and start the stage again.
A quick word on the tumbler itself
Rotary tumblers are the standard for beginners: slower, but they produce the rounded shapes most people picture and they are forgiving. Vibratory tumblers are much faster and preserve the original shape of the rock rather than rounding it, which is better for material you want to keep angular — but they are less tolerant of mistakes and cost more.
Whichever you use, put it somewhere the noise will not drive you out. It runs continuously for weeks, and a garage, shed or basement is a far better home for it than a kitchen counter.

How long does rock tumbling take?

Can you tumble different rocks together?
Only if they are close in hardness — aim to stay within about one point on the Mohs scale. In a tumbler the harder rocks grind the softer ones, so a mixed-hardness batch ends with the soft stones worn down and the hard ones under-polished. The quartz family (jasper, chalcedony, quartz, amethyst) all sit around Mohs 7 and tumble together well.
Why did my rocks come out dull instead of shiny?
Usually one of three things. A stage was cut short, so scratches from the previous grit were never fully removed. Or coarse grit was carried into a later stage because the barrel and rocks were not washed thoroughly between runs. Or the rock is simply porous — sandstone, chalky limestone and grainy material have no continuous surface to take a polish, however long you run them.
What rocks are best for tumbling?
Hard, dense, non-porous material. Jasper, agate and chalcedony are the classics, along with quartz of all kinds, petrified wood and tiger's eye. They are hard enough to take a genuine shine and tough enough to survive the coarse stage without chipping.
How full should a rock tumbler barrel be?
